Plagiarism Buster!

Ever wonder how lecturers check our work and find out we're plagiarising? Well I've searched through the web and found something intereting. Basically, there are a few ways to detect plagiarism. The principle to detect plagiarism is to compare an original work with your work. In order to do that, the person who check your work must have the original copies.

First, we must know what plagiarism is, a quote from Swinburne Plagiarism Guide, plagiarism is
'Put simply, plagiarism is cheating.
In essence, plagiarism is ‘stealing’ intellectual material. It can take many forms.
Three of these forms are discussed in this guide. Before these three types of plagiarism
are discussed in detail, it will be helpful to clarify some definitions.'

Here, I divided plagirsim into a few catagories.

  1. Plagiarism among friends.
  2. Plagiarise from books.
  3. Plagiarise from Internet.
  4. Plagiarise from your brain (Origianal).

Plagiarise among friends means you copy your work among each other in a group, or copying your friends' work from another semester. Plagiarise from books and Internet means you copy everything from the Internet without any citation or quotation mark.

Now the question is how does a lecturer knows if we're plagiarising?
They use some special software that search the Internet to match your writing with the article found. Here are a few examples..

Yeap, that is an original work.

Haha! See? I'm not plagiarising

Tips:
Most plagiarism detecting machine only detects everything they can find on Google, if you're copying from somewhere else, you might not get caught. Hehe! However, when people found out that you're actually copying stuff from others, you might get thrown out by the University or get your Bachelor's Degree eliminated.

Dr. Ong told us how he check works for plagiarism.

He copies a part of the report, pastes it into Google and view the results. If the hits look really alike to the report content, kantoi lah you! Hehe.

Good post, btw.

Yea, that's how people check it normally. We don't always get our assignment checked unless our work is doubtful.

Thanks for the compliment! :)
